چکیده

The inclusion of additional modalities into the communicative behavior of virtual agents besides speech has moved into focus of human-computer interface researchers, as humans are more likely to consider computer-generated figures lifelike when appropriate nonverbal behaviors are displayed in addition to speech. In this paper, we propose a knowledge-based approach for the automatic generation of gesture animations for an articulated figure. It combines a formalism for the representation of spatiotemporal gesture features, methods for planning individual gestural animations w.r.t. to form and timing, and formation of arm trajectories. Finally, enhanced methods for rendering animations from motor programs are incorporated in the execution of planned gestures. The approach is targetted to achieve a great variety of gestures as well as a higher degree of lifelikeness in synthetic agents.

Planning and Motion Control in Lifelike Gesture: A Refined Approach

In this paper an operational model for the automatic generation of lifelike gestures of an anthropomorphic virtual agent is described. The biologically motivated approach to controlling the movements of a highly articulated figure provides a transformation of spatiotemporal gesture specifications into an analog representation of the movement from which the animations are directly rendered. To t...

Lifelike Gesture Synthesis and Timing for Conversational Agents

Synthesis of lifelike gesture is finding growing attention in human-computer interaction. In particular, synchronization of synthetic gestures with speech output is one of the goals for embodied conversational agents which have become a new paradigm for the study of gesture and for human-computer interface. In this context, this contribution presents an operational model that enables lifelike g...

Lifelike Talking Faces for Interactive Services

Lifelike talking faces for interactive services are an exciting new modality for man–machine interactions. Recent developments in speech synthesis and computer animation enable the real-time synthesis of faces that look and behave like real people, opening opportunities to make interactions with computers more like face-to-face conversations. This paper focuses on the technologies for creating ...

Synthetic Animation of Deaf Signing Gestures

We describe a method for automatically synthesizing deaf signing animations from a high-level description of signs in terms of the HamNoSys transcription system. Lifelike movement is achieved by simulating a simple biocontrol model of human movement. The realism can be further enhanced by mixing the synthesized animation with motion capture data for the spine and neck, to add natural “ambient m...
